What will you learn?

(Commerciele Economie) In the AD Commercial Economics program, you learn the practical side of business operations and commercial processes. You take subjects like marketing, sales, business economics, financial management, communication, and business law. Additionally, you develop skills in market research, product presentation, customer contact, pricing calculations, and commercial analysis. What makes this AD unique compared to a full HBO bachelor's is the direct focus on practice-oriented commercial tasks that you can immediately apply in the business world, without the more theoretical depth of a four-year program. You work on real projects such as developing marketing plans for local businesses, organizing events, and conducting market research. You also do internships at companies where you directly participate in commercial activities like sales, purchasing, or marketing. This program is perfect for you if you are practically oriented, enjoy working with people, have commercial insight, and want to enter the job market quickly with concrete skills.

Required Education

For admission to AD Commercial Economics, you need at least an MBO level 4 diploma in an economic, commercial, or administrative field, or a HAVO diploma. The HAVO profile Culture & Society (C&M) or Economics & Society (E&M) fits best, because these profiles contain subjects like economics, history, social studies, and possibly a modern foreign language - all relevant for commercial functions. With E&M, you specifically get economics and mathematics, which directly connects to the business economics subjects in the program. In secondary school, subjects like economics, mathematics, Dutch, and English are important, because you need this knowledge for financial calculations, communication, and international trade. Most schools have no additional admission requirements or tests, but some do ask for a motivation letter. As an alternative pathway, you can also enter with a VWO diploma, or through a 21+ test if you don't have a suitable diploma but do have work experience.

Career Prospects

After your AD Commercial Economics, you can start working directly as a commercial employee, account manager, sales representative, buyer, marketing assistant, or sales advisor. You work in diverse sectors such as retail, wholesale, manufacturing, services, or at real estate agencies and insurance companies. Typical starting salaries range between €2,200 and €2,800 gross per month, depending on the sector and region. For career advancement, after several years of work experience you can move up to positions like sales manager, product manager, or account manager, or you can expand your AD in one year to a full HBO bachelor's in Commercial Economics or International Business for even better career opportunities and higher salary.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is changing AD Commercial Economics through automation of market analysis, personalization of customer communication, and AI-driven campaign optimization. Students learn to work with AI marketing tools, but human creativity and strategic thinking remain essential for the profession.
