Starting a business: how do you take that first step?

💡 Maybe you already have an idea. Or maybe not, but you do have that nagging feeling: I want to start something for myself. More freedom, more creativity, working your way. Entrepreneurship sounds exciting, but also big. Where on earth do you start?

The good news: you don't need to know or be able to do everything at once. Entrepreneurship often starts small. With an idea, a wish, or simply the question: what can I offer others?

In this blog you'll read how you can start entrepreneurship in a practical, achievable way.

1. Why do you want to become an entrepreneur?

❓ That might sound like stating the obvious, but it's an important first question. Not because you immediately need a watertight business plan, but because your motivation becomes the driving force behind everything you're going to do.

🌟 Do you want more freedom in your work? Create something that's truly yours? Follow your passion, or use your talents in a different way? Maybe you're ready for a new challenge, or you don't want to be employed anymore.

🧐 There's no right or wrong answer. But it helps to have your why clear, especially on days when things don't go smoothly.

2. Start with what you can already do or enjoy

🌱 Entrepreneurship doesn't need to start big. Think small. What do you enjoy doing? What do people often ask you for? What do you do without getting tired of it? Maybe you're good at writing, organizing, cooking, designing, coaching, explaining or repairing. It could be something creative, or practical. Make a list. Not with "I should be able to do this", but with "I enjoy doing this or it comes naturally to me". Often the first seeds for a business lie there.

💡 Tip: Take a look at the results of your Findmino leisure test if you've done it. Which activities give you energy? Can you do something with that for others?

3. Explore your idea (but don't get stuck in thinking)

🤔 Do you have an idea? Great. Play with it. Talk about it with people, write it down, look for examples of others doing something similar. But beware of endless planning, reading and doubting. The trap: thinking you need to know everything first before you're allowed to start.

🚀 Sometimes you learn the most by just starting. Create a simple Instagram page. Sell something via Marktplaats or Etsy. Offer your service to someone in your network. Just give it a try. The first version doesn't need to be perfect, it isn't for anyone.

4. Arrange some practical things (without drowning in details)

📑 At some point the moment comes: you need to register with the Chamber of Commerce. Exciting? Yes. Difficult? No. It's usually done in no time. You get a VAT number and can get started.

🛠️ Besides that, there are some basics that are useful:

  • Open a business account (for overview).
  • Choose a name (it can still change).
  • Think ahead about simple administration.

⚖️ But: don't make it heavier than it is. It doesn't need to be a corporation or expensive website yet. Just start. Much grows naturally once you're running.

5. Entrepreneurship is learning (not knowing everything)

📈 You don't have to be a born entrepreneur. You don't even have to be super commercial. What do you need? Curiosity, resilience and a bit of courage. You learn along the way. About your target audience, about yourself, about money and about making choices. Some things work right away, others not at all. That's part of it.

💪 Dare to make mistakes. Ask for help. Talk to other entrepreneurs. Everyone started somewhere, often also uncertain and searching.

6. Don't constantly compare yourself

🔍 This is perhaps the hardest: not constantly comparing yourself to others. On Instagram people seem to have it all perfectly figured out; a sleek brand, full agenda, hundreds of clients.

🔒 But you only know their front side. Not their doubts, mistakes or nights of worrying. Focus on your own pace.

7. Find your way of working

🛤️ One of the biggest advantages of entrepreneurship is that you decide how you work. You don't have to do business the traditional way if it doesn't suit you.

🌍 Want to stay small? Fine. Want to work location-independently? Possible. Prefer something crafty, local or without screens? Also good. Choose what fits your life, values and energy. Because that makes entrepreneurship sustainable and fun.

And now?

✨ If you feel that itch, take it seriously. Go take a brainstorming walk, talk to someone you trust, or write down your ideas without judgment. Entrepreneurship doesn't start with a business plan or marketing strategy. It starts with a curious step. And then another one.

📅 Whether you want to start your own business, work as a freelancer or just consider something on the side, you don't have to figure it all out tomorrow. But today is a good day to start.
