What does a Astronaut?

(Astronaut) As an astronaut, you are a pioneer of human exploration in space. You travel to space for advanced scientific research, pushing the boundaries of knowledge and technology. Daily, you spend time on intensive training and preparation for space missions. This includes physical training, simulator exercises, and learning to work with complex scientific instruments used in space. During missions, which can last weeks to months, you live and work aboard a space station or in a spacecraft, where you focus on scientific research such as microgravity experiments, studying the impact of spaceflight on the human body, and performing spacecraft maintenance. You work primarily in a high-tech environment, such as the International Space Station (ISS) or in various training facilities on Earth. Giving presentations to the public, sharing your experiences, and contributing to educational goals are also important parts of your role. What makes this profession particularly attractive is the opportunity to be part of a global team of scientists and representatives working together on humanity's future in space. The impact you have is enormous. Through research in space, astronauts contribute to understanding space, Earth's environment, and technology that improves daily life. However, you also face significant challenges. Physical and mental resilience are crucial, given the conditions in space, such as microgravity, limited space, and isolation from Earth. Additionally, collaboration with diverse international teams is essential. As an astronaut, you are therefore not only a scientist, but also an adventurer and team player who continuously pushes your limits.

Required Education

For astronaut, you need at least a university education (WO) in a technical or scientific field such as aerospace engineering, physics, chemistry, or medicine. In secondary school, you follow the VWO profile Nature & Technology (N&T), where mathematics B, physics, and chemistry are essential subjects. Additionally, years of experience as a test pilot, scientist, or in another technical top position is often required. Most space agencies also require excellent physical condition, multilingualism, and specific training that can take years.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

As an astronaut, your career usually begins as a pilot, engineer, or scientist with years of experience in aerospace. You can advance to mission commander, where you are responsible for entire space missions and team leadership. Next steps are often roles as astronaut trainer, space advisor, or director at space organizations. With the growth of commercial spaceflight and plans for Mars missions, this field offers excellent future prospects, although competition remains extremely high.

AI Impact on the job

AI will fundamentally change the astronaut role by automating routine tasks such as navigation and data processing, allowing astronauts to focus more on creative and strategic problems. New skills such as data analysis and collaboration with AI systems become crucial. Despite automation, specialized astronauts will remain, but demand for astronauts with technological and research skills will increase, with opportunities in the emerging space industry, where AI tools will play a significant role.
