(Chirurg) A surgeon is a medical specialist who performs surgical procedures to treat diseases, injuries and deformities. It requires extreme precision, a steady hand and the ability to perform under high pressure. You work in a team with anesthesiologists and surgical assistants.
To become a surgeon you need a university education in Medicine (WO), followed by a lengthy surgical specialization training of at least 6 years. For admission to Medicine, a VWO diploma is required, preferably with the Nature & Health (N&G) profile, including the subjects mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. These subjects are essential because they form the foundation for understanding medical processes and pharmacology. Work experience cannot compensate for the formal educational requirements here - a complete university medical education and recognized specialization are legally required to practice as a surgeon.
As a surgeon you typically enter through a long educational route: first studying medicine, then basic training to become a doctor followed by a 6-year surgical specialization. After your specialization you can progress to subspecializations such as cardiac, neuro or plastic surgery, or develop into leadership positions such as department head or medical manager. Experienced surgeons can also choose an academic career with research and education, or a combination of clinical work and management. The prospects are excellent due to aging population and technological developments, where robotic surgery and minimally invasive techniques offer new possibilities.
AI transforms the role of surgeons by supporting tasks such as diagnoses, surgical planning and image analysis. Surgeons must develop skills in data analysis and AI tools to work effectively with technology. This increases their precision and improves patient care. The job market will change, requiring surgeons to work more strategically and cooperatively. Automation may lead to a reduction in routine work, but simultaneously the demand for highly qualified surgeons may increase due to technological advancement.
