What does a Economist?

(Econoom) As an Economist, you are an indispensable link in the organization's team. In this role, you are responsible for analyzing complex economic data and trends, generating in-depth insights that enable policy advice for both internal and external stakeholders. Your daily tasks include collecting and interpreting economic statistics, conducting econometric analyses, and preparing reports that clearly present findings. You work in a dynamic environment where collaboration with other economists, data analysts, and policymakers is central. You have access to advanced tools and technologies that enable you to make accurate forecasts and evaluate the effects of economic policy measures. What makes this position extra attractive is the variety of topics you will investigate, from international trade issues to local market effects, and direct involvement in formulating policy that benefits clients and the broader community. The impact of your work is significant; your analysis helps organizations make informed decisions that shape their strategies and future visions. However, this role also brings challenges. You must be able to deal with uncertainties and fluctuations in the economy, and sometimes interpret conflicting data. Additionally, you must be skilled in communicating complex economic concepts in an understandable way to a diverse audience. In short, as an Economist, you are not only an analyst, but also a strategic advisor who contributes to shaping a better economic future.

Required Education

For a position as an Economist, you need at least an HBO bachelor's degree in Economics, Business Administration, or a related field, but a university master's in Economics or Econometrics is often preferred. If you progress through HAVO/VWO, it's best to choose the Economics & Society (E&M) profile, where strong mathematics skills are essential. Subjects like economics, history, and English are also important for this role. For senior positions, several years of relevant work experience in economic research or policy advice is usually expected alongside formal education.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

As an economist, you often start as a junior analyst or research assistant at government institutions, consultancy firms, or financial institutions. From this senior research position, you can advance to chief economist, policy advisor, or manager of economic research. Logical next steps are executive positions such as Chief Economist or strategic functions in business. The field offers excellent prospects due to increasing demand for data-driven decision-making and economic expertise in both public and private sectors.

AI Impact on the job

AI transforms the economist's role by accelerating data analysis and supporting more complex predictive models. Traditional tasks, such as collecting and interpreting data, are being automated, allowing economists to focus on strategic decision-making and policy advice. New skills such as data management, knowledge of AI tools, and critical thinking skills are becoming increasingly important. The job market for economists will adapt, with opportunities in analyzing AI results and developing policy around technology, although certain positions may disappear due to automation.
