What does a General practitioner?

(Huisarts) The general practitioner is the central medical care provider for individuals and families. You diagnose and treat a wide range of common conditions, refer patients to specialists, and coordinate overall patient care. It is a role with significant responsibility and patient contact.

Required Education

For general practitioner, a university education in Medicine (6 years) is mandatory, followed by a three-year specialization to become a general practitioner. For admission to Medicine studies, you need a VWO diploma with the Nature & Health (N&G) profile, where the subjects mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology are essential. After completing your specialization, you must register in the BIG register to practice as a general practitioner. Experience alone can never compensate for these formal educational requirements - medical education is legally mandatory.

As a general practitioner, you have usually progressed from the general practitioner training after your medical studies and possible experience as ANIOS. From this role, you can advance to specialization roles such as practice owner, locum general practitioner, or medical advisor at health insurance companies.
