What does a Interior designer?

(Interieurontwerper) As an interior designer, you are responsible for creating functional and aesthetic interiors that transform both residential and commercial spaces. Your days are filled with developing innovative design concepts, selecting colors, materials and furniture, and creating detailed drawings that bring your clients' vision to life. You work together with property developers, architects and other creative professionals. Together with these partners, you ensure that spaces are not only visually appealing, but also function optimally. This means you take into account the specific needs of users, both from an aesthetic and practical perspective. What makes this role so interesting is the opportunity to have a direct impact on people's living and working environment. You create spaces that not only meet the client's wishes, but also contribute to their wellbeing and productivity. The challenge often lies in balancing budgets, timelines and creative ideas, while maintaining functional solutions as a priority. Daily, you deal with various challenges, such as overcoming spatial limitations, handling difficult client requests and navigating through the complex world of building regulations. Each project is unique, which means no day is the same; this keeps your creativity constantly sharp and offers opportunities for professional growth. As an interior designer, you are a key player in shaping the future of modern interiors in a sector that is constantly evolving.

Required Education

For a career as an interior designer, you typically need an HBO education in the direction of spatial design, interior architecture or industrial design. If you are doing HAVO or VWO, the Nature & Technology (N&T) profile is most suitable, where subjects like mathematics, physics and drawing are important for developing spatial insight and technical understanding. The Culture & Society (C&M) elective profile can also be fitting due to the creative and cultural aspects of the profession. While formal education is strongly recommended, strong portfolio knowledge and practical experience at smaller design firms can sometimes also provide access to the sector.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

As an interior designer, you often start as a junior designer or draftsperson at a design firm, after which you grow into an independent project leader for complete interior projects. From this mid-level position, you can progress to senior designer, creative director or even start your own design studio. The field offers excellent prospects due to the growing demand for sustainable and functional interior design solutions in both the residential and commercial market. With experience, you can specialize in niche markets such as hospitality, retail or luxury housing construction.

AI Impact on the job

AI is transforming the role of interior designers by automating routine tasks such as sketching and material selection. This shifts the focus towards creativity and developing unique concepts. New skills such as data management and knowledge of AI tools are becoming increasingly important. Job market prospects are mixed; while some functions may disappear due to automation, new opportunities may also arise for designers who have specialized in combining AI with creative processes.
