(Kapper) As a hairdresser, you are responsible for creating the perfect look for your clients. This involves more than just cutting; it's a combination of technical skills and creativity. You work with different hair types and styles, and it's important that you stay up-to-date with the latest trends in hairstyles and hair coloring. Clients come to you for advice on the best hairstyles that suit their face shape and personal style. You also take their wishes and expectations into account, and you ensure they feel comfortable during their visit. A good hairdresser builds a trusting relationship with clients, so they keep coming back. Besides cutting and styling, you are also responsible for caring for your clients' hair, which may involve recommending treatments and products that promote hair health. Hygiene and cleanliness in the salon are essential, as well as maintaining equipment and workspace. Furthermore, it's important to provide friendly and professional customer service, so that every client leaves the salon with a smile.
For a career as a hairdresser, you typically follow an MBO education level 2 to 4 in the direction of Hairdresser or Hairstylist. This education combines practical techniques such as cutting, coloring and styling with theoretical knowledge about hair care, customer service and hygiene. During the education you also learn about face shape theory, color theory and the latest trends in the hairdressing world. While a formal hairdressing education is highly recommended due to the technical complexity of the profession, experienced assistants can sometimes advance through internal training and courses.
As a hairdresser, you usually start as an apprentice hairdresser or junior stylist to master the basic skills. After several years of experience, you can advance to senior hairdresser, salon manager or even start your own hair salon. Many hairdressers specialize further in areas such as color specialist, bridal stylist or barber. The hairdressing sector remains stable with good prospects, especially for hairdressers who keep up with trends and new techniques.
AI has profoundly changed the function of hairdresser. Smart systems can now predict hair conditions, recommend colors and even offer virtual try-on options, which improves the client experience. This makes creativity and personal interaction even more important, while technical skills in digital tools increase. Although automation can certainly take over some routine tasks, the demand for human hairdressers remains due to the need for creativity and personal atmosphere. The outlook on the job market remains moderately positive, provided hairdressers continue to develop.
