What does a Professional Dancer?

( Professioneel Danser) As a Professional Dancer, you are the driving force behind artistic expression and creativity within the arts, culture and media. Your daily activities include rehearsing dance routines, attending choreography sessions and performing for various audiences, including theater audiences, festivals or at events. You work together with musicians, choreographers and other dancers to create a captivating experience that touches the audience. Additionally, the role is attractive because you work in an inspiring environment where you can develop and challenge yourself, while collaborating with talented colleagues. The work environment is often dynamic, ranging from the stage to rehearsal rooms and dance studios, and it offers space for creative input and personal growth. You must be prepared for an irregular schedule that may include evenings and weekends, which means you must be flexible and dedicated to your art. As a Professional Dancer, you actively contribute to dance culture and inspire others with your performances and passion for dance.

Required Education

For a career as a professional dancer, an HBO education at a dance academy is usually required, such as the Bachelor of Dance at the Conservatorium or ArtEZ. For HAVO/VWO, it's best to choose the Culture & Society (C&M) profile, where subjects like music, dance or drama form a good foundation. While formal education is highly valued in the professional dance world, exceptionally talented dancers with years of intensive training and experience can sometimes break through without a diploma. Most dance programs do require an admission audition where your technique, creativity and physical suitability are assessed.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

As an aspiring dancer, you often start as an ensemble member, backup dancer or student at a dance academy. With experience, you can grow into leading roles in companies, choreographer, dance teacher or artistic director of your own dance company. Career steps run from ensemble to soloist, possibly followed by teaching or choreography roles. The field offers opportunities in theater, film, television and commercial projects, although it is physically demanding and usually has a shorter active period than other professions.

AI Impact on the job

AI is changing the role of the professional dancer by creating innovative choreographies, analyzing dance movements and improving training through personalized feedback. New skills, such as working with digital platforms and AI tools for choreography, are becoming increasingly important. The outlook on the labor market may be mixed; while AI may offer new creative possibilities, there is also the possibility of competition from automated systems, making authenticity and personal expression essential.
