What will you learn?

(ICT) In the Associate Degree ICT you learn the practical side of information technology, from developing software to managing networks and databases. You dive into programming languages like Java, Python and JavaScript, learn to build web applications and gain hands-on experience with system administration and network infrastructure. The program combines technical subjects like software development, data management and cybersecurity with practical project skills and communication. What makes this AD unique compared to a full HBO bachelor's degree is the focus on direct practical applicability, with less theoretical background but more hands-on experience. You work on real projects for companies, complete internships at ICT companies and build a portfolio with working applications and systems. This program is perfect for you if you want to enter the ICT job market quickly, enjoy practical work and like to develop concrete ICT solutions. You also learn to work project-based, collaborate in teams and communicate about technical topics with non-technical colleagues.

Required Education

For admission to the AD ICT you need at least an MBO level 4 diploma, preferably in a technical field like ICT, or a HAVO or VWO diploma. The HAVO profile Nature & Technology (N&T) fits best, because you have already been introduced to mathematics, physics and often computer science, which forms a good foundation for programming and technical insight. The profile Nature & Health (N&G) is also suitable because of the mathematical component. Specifically, mathematics and preferably computer science are important, as these give you logical thinking skills and first programming experience. Some schools have additional admission requirements like an interview or a small test to assess your motivation and technical interest. As alternative admission you can also be admitted with an MBO-3 diploma plus relevant work experience in ICT, or through an admission test if you have a different background but demonstrable ICT interest and experience.

Career Prospects

After your AD ICT you can work as a junior software developer, ICT administrator, helpdesk employee, web developer or system and network administrator at companies in all sectors. You'll find work at ICT service providers, software companies, web agencies, but also at hospitals, banks, government organizations and SME companies that need internal ICT support. As a starter you can expect a salary between €2,200 and €2,800 gross per month, depending on your specialization and the region where you work. The career advancement opportunities are excellent: you can progress to a full HBO bachelor's ICT to broaden your knowledge and grow into functions like ICT consultant, project manager or system architect, or you develop further as a specialist in cybersecurity, data analysis or mobile development.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is fundamentally transforming AD ICT. Programming is shifting toward AI-assisted development with tools like GitHub Copilot. Students must learn to collaborate with AI, master prompt engineering and focus on complex problem-solving that AI cannot automate. Demand for IT professionals remains high, but the work is changing dramatically.
