What will you learn?

(Informatica) In the AD Computer Science program, you learn the fundamentals of software development, system administration, and ICT support. You acquire practical skills in programming languages such as Java, Python, and C#, managing databases with SQL, and working with web development technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Additionally, you gain knowledge of network management, cybersecurity basics, and configuring servers and cloud solutions. This two-year program distinguishes itself from a full HBO bachelor's degree through its direct focus on the job market and hands-on approach. From day one, you work on concrete projects such as developing web applications, mobile apps, and setting up networks. An important component is the internship of at least 20 weeks at ICT companies, where you gain experience with real-world problems. The program is ideal for practically oriented students who want to quickly enter the ICT sector, but also want a solid foundation for potential progression to a full bachelor's degree.

Required Education

For admission to AD Computer Science, you need at least an MBO-4 diploma, preferably in a technical or ICT-related field, or a HAVO/VWO diploma. The best-fitting elective profile is Nature & Technology (N&T) due to the mathematical and technical foundation that is essential for programming and system analysis. Economics & Society (E&M) can also be suitable if you have an affinity for ICT and business processes. Mathematics B at HAVO level is usually required because you need to understand algorithms and logical reasoning is crucial for programming. Some universities of applied sciences also require physics or computer science as an elective subject. There are no specific entrance exams, but there are intake interviews to assess your motivation and basic knowledge. Alternative admission is possible through a 21+ test for adults without formal diplomas, where you demonstrate your suitability through assessment.

Career Prospects

After completing AD Computer Science, you can work as a junior software developer, ICT supporter, system administrator, web developer, or database specialist. You can find employment at ICT companies, software houses, web agencies, but also at large organizations in healthcare, education, government, and SME companies that have their own ICT departments. Starting salaries range between €2,200 and €2,800 gross per month, depending on the region and specific position. Career advancement opportunities are excellent: you can progress to a full HBO bachelor's in Computer Science or ICT (often with exemptions for the first year), after which positions as senior developer, IT architect, or project manager become within reach. You can also specialize in cybersecurity, data analysis, or mobile development for better career prospects.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is fundamentally transforming AD Computer Science. Programming is shifting toward AI-assisted development with tools like GitHub Copilot. Students must learn to collaborate with AI, master prompt engineering, and focus on complex problem-solving that AI cannot automate. The demand for IT professionals remains high, but the work is changing dramatically.
