Patriek PaapThe coolest food halls of Europe
Food halls have something unique - the combination of a diverse range of cuisines and bites mixed with the bustle of tourists and locals creates a unique but impressive atmosphere. The great thing about a food hall is that you're not tied to anything, you can taste everything and you set your own pace. This all sounds pretty good, of course, and we can already hear you asking which ones are the best, which is why we've lined them up for you!
Borough Market, London
Borough Market is one of Europe's oldest food halls and is located right near London Bridge. Under railway arches you'll find street food from many different countries, complemented by permanent restaurants and eateries. Think Indian curries, Ethiopian wraps, British pies and freshly baked bread.
Mercat de la Boqueria, Barcelona
Right in the middle of Las Ramblas lies this colorful market full of fish, meat, fruit and tapas. The stalls are clearly arranged and ideal for quick snacks like empanadas, smoothies and small tapas dishes.
Time Out Market Lisboa, Lisbon
This isn't a classic market, but a large food hall with top establishments from the city. Everything revolves around one central dining area. Here you can get Portuguese classics, fish dishes, burgers and desserts, without needing to make reservations.
Markthalle Neun, Berlin
This industrial market hall is especially famous for Street Food Thursday. That's when dozens of stands fill the hall with cuisines from Korea, Mexico and Vietnam. This allows you to try many exotic dishes a bit closer to home.
TorvehallerneKBH, Copenhagen
The TorvehallerneKBH in Copenhagen offers a large food hall divided across two modern market halls with more than sixty stalls combined. The offerings here are Scandinavian and international, with excellent patisserie and specialty coffee. This market is known for its small dishes that you can share in a cozy way when traveling with multiple people.
Mercato Centrale Firenze, Florence
The Mercato Centrale Firenzo in Florence is a large food hall with 2 floors. Here you have a large traditional fresh market downstairs and upstairs a spacious food hall with pasta, pizza and desserts. This market is fun with a large group and ideal if you want to eat good Italian food quickly.
Mercado de San Miguel, Madrid
And lastly, an atmospheric, covered market full of tapas and snack stalls. Not the cheapest option, but perfect for combining multiple small dishes during an evening in the city.
Ideal during a city trip
Food halls are the perfect combination of bustle and variety of cuisines/dishes as far as the eye can see. Furthermore, they're often relatively centrally located and easily accessible by car and/or public transport. Don't know what you want to eat, or just want to try a bit of everything? Then this is really something for you! So, which food hall can we find you at soon?
