Rogier RijnjaHow do you start networking?
🤝 Many people already get a bit itchy at the word networking. It conjures up images of cold receptions, tight suits and the awkward handing out of business cards. But networking doesn't have to be like that at all. In fact: it can be fun, meaningful and completely fitting with who you are.
🔗 Networking is fundamentally not about 'selling' or 'scoring', but about connection. About getting to know each other, exchanging ideas and seeing where you can help each other. Whether that's for work, study or your personal life.
Why network?
- 80% of jobs are found through connections. Not via a job board, but because someone tips you off or recommends you.
- You learn faster and broader by exchanging ideas and experiences with people who think differently than you.
- New opportunities arise spontaneously when you're in contact with the right people; opportunities you would never have found by just googling.
- You increase your visibility: the more people know what you do, the greater the chance they'll think of you for an opportunity that's perfect for you.
5 tips to network in your own way
🔍 1. Start close to home
Your network is bigger than you think. Family, friends, former classmates, colleagues, neighbors, sports buddies, they all know other people. Tell them what you're working on or what you're looking for and you'll notice that connections arise more often than you think.
2. Be genuinely curious
Don't immediately start broadcasting, but ask questions. What does someone do? What makes him or her happy? What's currently happening in their life or work? People remember when you really listen.
3. Find places that suit you
Networking doesn't have to be at a formal event. It can also be during a workshop, volunteer project, sports club or online community. Choose places where you feel comfortable, then the contact will naturally be warmer.
4. Give before you ask
Networking works best when it's two-way traffic. Think along, share tips, make an introduction. When you help others, you help yourself too, often at unexpected moments.
5. Keep it alive
🔥 You don't build a network in one day. Send a message occasionally, respond to a post, or plan a coffee meeting. Small gestures keep the bond warm.
