How are animals honored worldwide?

🐾 On October 4th, we celebrate World Animal Day. In the Netherlands, the day is mainly dedicated to our pets. Cats and dogs get an extra treat, guinea pigs get a clean cage, and maybe even a toy is bought. But worldwide, the relationship between humans and animals has much deeper layers. In many countries, animals are not only cared for, but also revered. They have spiritual meaning and are seen as messengers of gods or as bringers of good luck.

🌍 In this article, we take you on a journey through several countries and cultures where animals have a special and sometimes sacred role.

Cows in India: symbol of life and abundance

🐄 Perhaps the most well-known example: the cow in India. Within Hinduism, the cow is seen as a sacred animal. It symbolizes fertility, abundance, and selflessness. Cows provide milk, butter, and manure and are therefore seen as nurturing and life-giving.

🏙️ On the streets in India, you encounter them everywhere. They roam freely, even in busy cities. The respect for cows goes far: many Hindus don't eat beef, and in some states it's even forbidden to slaughter cows. During holidays, cows are decorated with flowers and colored powders as a sign of gratitude.

Cats in ancient Egypt: protectors and bringers of good luck

🐱 In ancient Egypt, cats had an almost divine status. They were associated with the goddess Bastet, the goddess of fertility, love, and protection. Cats were seen as protectors of the home, especially because they kept mice and snakes at bay.

🏺 Such was their status that killing a cat, even by accident, was severely punished. Some cats even got a place in graves and were mummified, just like people. Today, you still see the symbol of the cat reflected in Egyptian art and souvenirs.

Elephants in Thailand: strength and wisdom

🐘 Elephants are deeply intertwined with Thai culture and Buddhist tradition. They symbolize strength, luck, and wisdom. The white elephant in particular has sacred meaning: according to tradition, a white elephant appeared in the dream of Buddha's mother, just before he was born.

🎨 Elephants also play a role in festivities and religious rituals. They are beautifully painted and dressed in colorful fabrics. At the same time, the discussion about tourism and animal welfare is also growing in Thailand. More and more organizations are ch in to care for elephants in a respectful way, without using them as attractions.

Snakes in Africa and Asia: between fear and worship

🐍 Snakes often evoke mixed feelings: fear, but also fascination. In various African and Asian cultures, snakes are seen as powerful, spiritual animals. They symbolize both death and rebirth, because they shed their skin and thus make a new beginning.

⛪ In some villages in West Africa, pythons are even cared for and protected in temples. People bring offerings or flowers to appease the snake, hoping for protection or fertility.

Dogs in Nepal: their own holiday

🐕 In Nepal, dogs get a special day annually during the Tihar festival. On the second day of this feast, the dog takes center stage. They are honored as loyal protectors and messengers of the god of death, Yama.

🎉 Dogs receive flower garlands around their necks that day, their foreheads are decorated with a red tika (dot) and of course they get extra food. The image of cheerfully decorated dogs in the streets of Nepal shows how much respect and love exists for them.

Cattle and yaks in Tibet: life in the mountains

🏔️ In Tibet, animals play an important role in daily life and in Buddhist tradition. Especially yaks, large cattle that live at high altitudes, are enormously valued. They provide milk, meat and wool and are used as pack animals.

🕊️ In Tibetan Buddhism, a deep connection with all living beings applies. Animals are seen as fellow inhabitants of the world who, like humans, deserve compassion and care. The slaughter of animals is avoided as much as possible and rituals emphasize the importance of respect for animal life.

Monkeys in India and Bali: playful and sacred

🐒 In both India and Bali, monkeys are associated with divine powers. In India, monkeys are connected to Hanuman, the monkey god who symbolizes strength, loyalty and courage. In many temples, monkeys roam freely and are fed by visitors.

🌿 You can also find sacred monkeys in Bali, for example in the famous Monkey Forest in Ubud. There they are seen as protectors of the temple. Their cheeky behavior, stealing sun dog treats and snacks, is often accepted with a smile, because their presence brings luck.

Sacred cows in Africa: status and wealth

🐂 Not only in India, but also in parts of Africa, cows have an almost sacred status. Among some tribes, such as the Masai in Kenya and Tanzania, cows symbolize wealth, status and connection with the community. A large part of their life revolves around caring for livestock. Cows are not only seen as a food source, but also as part of their spiritual and cultural identity.

Why animals are revered worldwide

💫 Whether it's cows, dogs, elephants or cats: everywhere in the world you see that animals are more than just pets or food sources. They have a place in stories, religions and rituals. Often they symbolize qualities that people admire or strive for: strength, wisdom, loyalty or protection.

🌐 The beautiful thing is that this respect for animals is a universal theme. Despite the differences between cultures, you see that everywhere there is a deep awareness that humans and animals are connected to each other.

Animal Day

📅 Perhaps that's the power of Animal Day: it reminds us that animals everywhere in the world have a place in our lives and that they deserve respect and care. What are you going to do for Animal Day?
