Solo dates have never been so popular

Your agenda is packed with work, appointments, and social plans. You get the feeling that you haven't stood still for a long time or given yourself enough attention. Sound familiar? Maybe it's time to go on a date with yourself.

A solo date, what is that?

The name says it all, a date with yourself. You plan something fun, nurturing, or inspiring, but you do it for yourself. This can be something small, like coffee with a book, but also bigger, like a museum visit or a day trip.

The intention behind it is what makes it powerful. You're not sitting alone because you've been rejected, but because you choose it yourself.

Alone-time can go two ways. Chosen alone-time, also called solitude, often gives peace and space in your head, but involuntary loneliness feels heavy and empty. Solo dates fall into that first category. You consciously create a moment that's yours, where you take yourself into account.

See a solo date as taking a moment for yourself, for example by having a fun outing or taking a nice rest moment, through which you get to know yourself better.

The popularity behind solo dates

Solo dates aren't new, but they are being done more and more. Social media plays a big role in this. On Instagram and TikTok you see people going to the movies alone or reserving a table for one more often. This way the stigma around the solo date is slowly being broken and it's even becoming a normal conversation topic. Additionally, the solo economy is growing. More people live alone more often, work flexibly, or plan their free time independently of others. Solo dining, taking workshops, or exploring a city alone is becoming increasingly normal.

At the same time, we're looking for more recovery moments. Work, screen time, and social pressure demand a lot of energy. Alone-time is less seen as pathetic and more as maintenance for your mental health.

Our favorites

1. Coffee or tea with a book in a café

Find a place where you like to sit and consciously take your time. Order something nice, put your phone away and read a few chapters or make notes. The environment makes it feel like an outing, not like hanging on the couch at home. It's a low-threshold way to make alone-time pleasant and relaxed.

2. Walk without phone

Leave your phone at home or put it on airplane mode. Walk a familiar route or choose a street you normally skip. Without constant stimuli you notice more details and your mind settles down. Many people experience this as a small mental reset in the middle of the day.

3. Mini-museum or bookstore visit

Plan an hour to wander around without purpose. Look at what catches your attention and stay there a bit longer. You don't have to consider anyone else and you determine the pace. That makes such a short visit both relaxing and inspiring.

4. Cinema during the day

A movie during the day or on weekdays feels calmer and less rushed. When you go to the movies alone you can immerse yourself better in the story than when you go with someone. See it as two hours when you don't have to be anywhere else.

5. Creative workshop

Make something beautiful from ceramics, create your own candles or paint a crazy portrait! By being busy with your hands, you get absorbed in the moment. You learn something new, without performance pressure. Who knows, you might discover a new passion.

6. Lunch for one

Reserve a table or sit at the bar with a book or magazine. By actually planning it, it feels less like quick eating and more like a moment for yourself. You learn to become more comfortable with dining out alone. That gives freedom to go spontaneously whenever you want and you can more easily discover restaurants you were very curious about.

7. Sauna or spa moment

A few hours without screens, obligations and conversations has more benefits than you expect. Warmth and rest help your body relax, making your mind slowly empty. This creates a clear break from all input. See it as maintenance for yourself, not as luxury.

8. Nature moment with notebook

Go to the beach, forest or park with a notebook. Write down what's on your mind or make loose thoughts and lists. By writing you organize your head without it becoming heavy. It helps to get clear again about what's important to you.

Something for you?

In the beginning it might feel unfamiliar to do something alone, but that's normal. With a plan and a clear intention you'll lose that feeling soon enough and notice how much space it gives. Put one solo date in your calendar this week and treat that appointment as seriously as any other. Where will you take yourself soon?
