Set a timer on your social media

You have no energy for household chores. No time for your hobbies. And when a friend wants to meet up, it quickly feels like too much. You think: I'm just busy. But are you really busy? Or are you mainly spending too much time on your phone? Dutch young people between 15 and 35 spend an average of over 5 hours per day on their smartphone. That's 35 hours per week. Almost a full work week. Just imagine if you invested that time in those things you "never get around to".

You feel busy because you're constantly distracted

Social media feels like a break, but your brain is working overtime. Scrolling, reacting, comparing and processing. No wonder you have no energy left for cooking, tidying up or exercising. Your head is full, while you haven't done anything "intense". And yet you notice it. You feel rushed, tired, restless. That's not because you have too little time, but because your time is leaking away without you realizing it.

The reality check

  • You have "no time" to read, but you do watch three quarters of an hour of reels every evening.
  • You have "no energy" for a walk, but lose yourself for hours on TikTok.
  • You want more peace, but reach for your phone at every free moment.

A simple exercise that works

Step 1: Set a timer on your social media.
Use the screen time function on your phone and set a limit for the social media channels where you lose yourself daily. One hour per day is already a good start.

Step 2: Make a list of things you never have time for.
For example: reading a book, being creative, calling a friend, organizing the closet, going outside.

Step 3: When your timer goes off, choose something from that list.
You've reclaimed time. Use it consciously. Not to 'have to', but to give yourself back something you're missing.

Your brain craves completion and structure. Social media is endless, so your brain keeps spinning. A timer provides a clear boundary. And by then doing something that really gives satisfaction, you experience peace and control.

More peace, less noise

You don't have to go completely offline. Just less unconsciously. By setting a timer, you reclaim time and energy for things that are important to you. You'll quickly notice:
  • More focus and relaxation
  • Less rushed feeling -> More satisfaction at the end of your day

Small intervention, big difference

Try it for a week. Set a timer, be honest with yourself, and see what happens. You'll be surprised how much space is created just by putting your screen aside for a while.
