Mosa TomeijBullet Journal: how does it work and why is it good?
In recent years, keeping a Bullet Journal (BuJo) has become increasingly popular. On TikTok you see many videos where you can follow someone's journey using such a Bullet Journal. It's a creative way to create overview in your daily life. From task lists to creative expressions, you can fill in a Bullet Journal in your own way. But what exactly is it, how does it work and why would you start one? We'll explain!
What is a Bullet Journal?
📝 A Bullet Journal is a combination of an agenda, diary and to-do list, designed by Ryder Carroll. It's a flexible, fun and creative way to organize your life. Instead of standard pre-printed pages you use ablank notebook, for example from HEMA. This way you can divide and design the pages yourself however you want. Think for example of short notes, lists and symbols. The idea behind it is that you can empty your head and put everything on paper to create order in your thoughts. You determine everything yourself and can choose for yourself how and what you want to keep track of: daily tasks, monthly goals, how many hours you slept or how many pages you read that day. Your Bullet Journal becomes a personal system that is completely tailored to your needs.

How does a Bullet Journal work?
🔍 There are a number of components you can place in a Bullet Journal:
- Index: in this section is everything you keep track of in your journal. You can add page numbers which makes it easier to find everything back.
- Futurelog: this is an overview of long-term planning. Think of birthdays, vacations or important deadlines. You can also add goals you want to achieve.
- Monthly log: here you note the plans for that month. You can put appointments with friends or family in it, tasks you need to do or short-term goals. You can also use these pages well as an agenda.
- Daily log: these pages are for daily tasks. Note to-do's, notes and/or events for that day. You can use symbols for this, such as bullet points, circles and dashes to distinguish tasks, appointments and ideas. You can fill in the pages daily or the evening before so you are well prepared.
Why is a Bullet Journal good?
✨ A Bullet Journal works well because it is a powerful tool. Anyone can use it, someone who needs order in the chaos of everyday life, or someone who needs a flexible and personal overview. It is your own journal, so it fits completely with the wishes you have and thus has many more advantages:
- Structure and overview: by keeping everything in one place, you gain insight into your priorities and goals. Whether it's about work, study or personal projects. You can combine everything in one system that suits you.
- Creative freedom: besides all tasks, to-do's and goals, you can also add drawings, mood trackers, moodboards or inspiring quotes. The creative aspect stimulates your brain and can help reduce stress.
- Mindfulness and reflection: by occasionally reflecting on your day, you learn to consciously pause and consider what you do and feel. You become more aware of your time management and habits. This can help with making certain choices.
- Productivity: large goals are easily and clearly split into smaller steps that are more quickly achievable. This way you can work more productively and it provides satisfaction when you can check things off.
- Personal growth: you can use your Bullet Journal to track habits and your mood. You can also ask yourself questions weekly, so you get to know yourself better. You grow on a personal level and can beautifully record this in your journal.
