What does a Librarian?

(Bibliothecaris) As a librarian you are the key to unlocking and managing a treasure trove of knowledge and information. Your daily activities encompass a broad range of responsibilities, from organizing and maintaining a diverse collection of books, journals and digital resources, to assisting professionals with their information search processes. You work in a stimulating environment, where you collaborate with a team of passionate colleagues who all share the same goal: optimizing knowledge accessibility and sharing. Your day often begins with checking incoming materials and cataloguing new acquisitions, after which you focus on answering questions from employees who are looking for specific information or market research. This variety makes the role particularly interesting; you're not only working with documents, but also playing a crucial role in facilitating decisions and strategies within the organization. Your expertise can help organizations work more efficiently and make better informed choices. The impact of your work is significant. By making insightful information and educational resources available, you contribute to the professional development of individuals and teams. This can lead to innovative solutions and a more competitive position within the market. However, in this role you are also confronted with various challenges. Think of keeping up with rapidly changing technologies and continuously evaluating the organization's information needs. You also need to ensure that the information you provide is always relevant and current, which requires constant development and adaptation. In short, as a librarian you combine your love for information with the dynamics of the business world, which offers unique opportunities and challenges every day.

Required Education

For a position as librarian you need at least an MBO qualification level 2-4, with programs such as Information & Communication, Media Management or related fields being most suitable. A subject profile with subjects like Dutch, history or computer science during your secondary education forms a good foundation. Haven't completed a specific library education? Then relevant work experience in the information or service sector, combined with additional courses on information management, can often compensate for missing diplomas.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

As a librarian you often start as a library employee or assistant, where you gain experience with collection management and customer service. From this role you can grow to senior librarian, department head or branch manager. With further development, positions as head of information services, knowledge manager or director of library organizations are possible. The field is evolving toward digital information services and knowledge management, which offers new opportunities in both public and private sectors.

AI Impact on the job

AI transforms the role of the librarian by automating routine tasks such as cataloguing and answering frequently asked questions via chatbots. This shifts the focus to skills such as information analysis, data management and use of AI tools. New librarians must be familiar with technologies that support big data and digital archiving. The job market will likely shrink for traditional functions, but new opportunities arise in data analysis and developing digital services.
