What does a Primary school teacher?

(Onderwijzer/ Onderwijzeres) As a Teacher, you are responsible for providing education to students of primary school age. You guide them in developing their knowledge, skills, and social competencies. Daily, you prepare lessons that align with learning objectives and the group's level, and provide clear and structured instructions. You support students individually or in small groups during their work, ensuring each child receives the attention they need. Additionally, you create a stimulating, inclusive, and safe learning environment where students can develop at their own pace. You ensure a good balance between rest, routine, and challenge, and you encourage creativity, independence, and a positive work attitude. You systematically monitor students' progress and adjust your approach when necessary, so you meet the needs of different learning levels and learning styles. The impact of your role is significant: you not only contribute to children's cognitive development but also play an important role in their social, emotional, and personal growth. You coach students in collaboration, dealing with emotions, and discovering their talents and interests. Furthermore, you work closely with parents and caregivers by regularly informing them about their child's development and thinking along with them about appropriate support. You also maintain contact with fellow teachers, internal supervisors, and other specialists to continuously improve education. You participate in team meetings, training sessions, and consultations to stay informed about new teaching methods and developments within education. This way, you actively contribute to the quality of the school and the learning climate.

Required Education

For this position, you need a pabo diploma (pedagogical academy for primary education), which is an HBO level 6 degree. To be admitted to pabo, you must have completed at least HAVO, with a profile including Dutch and mathematics being important. During pabo training, you learn to teach all primary school subjects, child psychology, and didactics. A formal pabo education is legally required - experience alone is not sufficient to work as a qualified teacher.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

As a teacher, you often start as a beginning teacher in primary school, possibly after experience as a substitute teacher or teaching assistant. You can advance to coordinator of a subject area, mentor of new colleagues, or team leader of a department within the school. Next steps include assistant principal and eventually school principal, or you can choose to specialize as a remedial teacher, internal supervisor, or school counselor. Education offers good job security with ongoing demand for qualified teachers.

AI Impact on the job

AI influences the role of the teacher by automating administrative tasks, giving teachers more time for personal interaction with students. New skills such as data literacy and the use of AI tools become essential to facilitate personalized learning. Job market prospects are mixed: while some traditional roles may disappear, there is demand for professionals who effectively integrate technology into education. Innovation in pedagogical methods can create new opportunities for teachers.
