What does a Internal Auditor?

(Interne Auditor) An Internal Auditor forms a crucial link within the organization and plays an essential role in ensuring the integrity of financial reporting and operational processes. In this dynamic role, an Internal Auditor is responsible for conducting in-depth audits and analyses aimed at improving internal controls and increasing efficiency within the organization. Daily activities include planning, executing and reporting audits, as well as formulating recommendations for improvements based on findings. An Internal Auditor works in a professional and supportive environment where teamwork is central. The culture encourages continuous learning and development, allowing Internal Auditors to continuously challenge themselves and grow in their role. There is regular contact with various departments, ensuring a varied workday and providing ample opportunities to build valuable relationships. This role is interesting because of the impact an Internal Auditor has on business operations and the opportunities to contribute to improving processes. The analyses directly help identify and address potential risks early, which is essential for the financial health of the organization. Furthermore, an Internal Auditor plays a key role in strengthening trust among clients and stakeholders. Challenges are abundant, from keeping up with complex regulations to navigating sometimes conflicting interests within different teams. An Internal Auditor must be able to think critically and communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, to clearly convey findings and recommendations. An Internal Auditor is not only a guardian of the organization, but also a partner in growth and improvement.

Required Education

For a position as Internal Auditor, you need at least an HBO degree, preferably in a field such as Accountancy, Business Economics or Financial Management. If you go through the VWO route, the Economics & Society (E&M) profile is most suitable, with strong performance in mathematics and economics being essential. A university degree in Economics, Business Administration or Accountancy offers even better opportunities and is preferred by many employers. Relevant work experience in finance, controlling or external accountancy can sometimes compensate for a lower education level, but the complexity of modern audit work makes a solid theoretical foundation virtually indispensable.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

As a starter, you can begin as Junior Auditor, Risk Analyst or Finance Trainee to gain experience with financial processes and control systems. From the Internal Auditor role, you grow to Senior Auditor, Audit Manager or Risk Manager, with opportunities toward Chief Audit Executive or compliance functions. The audit experience also opens doors to external audit at accounting firms, finance management positions or consultancy roles. The field offers excellent prospects due to increasing regulations and focus on risk management in organizations.

AI Impact on the job

AI is transforming the role of the internal auditor through automation of routine tasks, such as data collection and analysis. Auditors will increasingly focus on strategic insights and risk management. New skills, such as data analysis and knowledge of AI tools, are becoming essential. Job market prospects indicate a shift: while some traditional roles disappear, AI simultaneously creates demand for hybrid roles that combine both audit and IT skills.
