(Longarts) As a pulmonologist, you specialize in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of lung and respiratory tract disorders. You treat patients with complex lung diseases such as lung cancer, COPD, asthma, pulmonary fibrosis and respiratory tract infections. In your daily practice, you perform specialized examinations such as bronchoscopies, interpret chest X-rays and CT scans, and develop treatment plans in consultation with multidisciplinary teams. You work closely with other specialists such as thoracic surgeons, oncologists and intensivists, and guide patients through complex treatment pathways where you provide both curative and palliative care.
As a pulmonologist, you usually start as a resident physician after completing your medical studies, followed by the six-year specialization training in pulmonary medicine. After your registration as a pulmonologist, you can advance to senior pulmonologist, department head or even medical manager of a lung center. You can further subspecialize in areas such as interventional pulmonology, lung oncology or sleep medicine. The field offers excellent prospects due to an aging population, increasing air pollution and growing demand for specialized pulmonary care.
