What does a Meteorologist?

(Meteoroloog) As an experienced meteorologist you play a crucial role in analyzing and predicting weather patterns and climate changes. Your daily activities include studying complex data and models related to weather and climate trends. You engage in collecting meteorological data from various sources, including satellites, weather stations and atmospheric stations, to make accurate and reliable predictions. Additionally, you are responsible for developing reports and presentations to share your findings with internal and external stakeholders. You work in a dynamic and stimulating environment, often within a team of other scientists, analysts and financial experts. It is a role where your expertise directly influences strategic decision-making within companies that depend on weather information, such as the agricultural sector, energy companies and transport companies. What makes this role so interesting is the combination of science and practice. The impact of your work is enormous, as accurate weather forecasts can not only improve the operational efficiency of companies, but also contribute to risk management and promoting sustainability. You have the opportunity to influence how companies adapt to climate change and extreme weather conditions. However, there are also challenges, such as dealing with uncertainty in weather models and the need to continuously stay informed about the latest scientific developments. Each day brings new data and insights, which means you must always be alert and innovative to achieve the best results.

Required Education

For a position as meteorologist, you need at least an HBO bachelor's degree in meteorology, physical geography or applied physics, but a university master's degree in meteorology, atmospheric sciences or physics is often preferred. If you want to pursue this direction via HAVO/VWO, you choose the Nature & Technology (N&T) profile with mandatory subjects such as mathematics, physics and preferably chemistry. A strong foundation in statistics and programming is essential for working with complex weather models and data processing. For a senior position, in addition to the right education, several years of relevant work experience in meteorological research or weather forecasting is required.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

As a meteorologist, you often start as a junior weather forecaster at KNMI or a weather bureau, where you gain basic experience in weather predictions and data collection. You can grow into specialist roles such as climate researcher, senior forecaster or advisor for companies in energy and agriculture. Typical career steps lead to management positions, project leadership at research institutes or consultancy in climate adaptation. The field offers excellent prospects due to increasing attention for climate change and sustainability.

AI Impact on the job

AI is changing the role of meteorologists by improving automatic data processing and prediction models, making more accurate weather forecasts possible. Meteorologists now need to develop skills in data visualization, machine learning and programming to be able to use AI tools. This automation may reduce demand for traditional meteorological roles, but there remains a need for human expertise for interpretation and communication of the data. The job market will shift toward data-driven roles, but there are opportunities for meteorologists who adapt to this technology.
