What does a Pediatrician?

(Pediater) A pediatrician is a medical specialist who focuses on the care of children and adolescents, from birth to their late teenage years. This professional screens, diagnoses and treats a wide range of conditions daily, from simple infections to complex chronic diseases. Pediatricians perform physical examinations, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and develop treatment plans tailored to the unique needs of each young patient. They provide parenting advice, information about vaccinations and preventive care, while advising and supporting families in their role. The work takes place in dynamic, often busy medical environments such as hospitals, health centers or private practices. Pediatricians work together with nurses, therapists and other healthcare professionals in interdisciplinary teams that enhance the quality of care and ensure a holistic approach to children's health. These specialists make real impact in the lives of young patients by contributing to their physical health, but also to their mental and emotional wellbeing. The work remains challenging due to the variety of patients with different backgrounds and health challenges. Common challenges include guiding parents through emotional situations, resistance to vaccinations, or dealing with the complexity of chronic diseases. Pediatricians play an essential role in creating a healthy future for the next generation. This profession requires complete medical training, followed by a four-year pediatric specialization training. Important skills are empathy, communication skills with children and parents, diagnostic competence and patience. Career opportunities consist of subspecialization in areas such as pediatric cardiology, neonatology or developmental pediatrics, leadership positions in hospitals, research positions, or academic careers at medical faculties.

Required Education

To become a pediatrician, a university education in Medicine (6 years) is strictly required, followed by a specialization in Pediatrics for another 6 years. For admission to Medicine studies you need a VWO diploma with the profile Nature & Health (N&G), where the subjects biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics are essential. After obtaining your medical degree and completing the specialization training you must register as a medical specialist with the BIG (Individual Healthcare Professions). Work experience alone can never compensate for these formal education requirements, as it is a legally protected medical profession.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

As a pediatrician you usually start as a resident in training (AIOS) in pediatrics after your basic medical training. After your specialization you can advance to senior pediatrician, department head or even medical director of a children's hospital. You can also further subspecialize in areas such as pediatric cardiology, neonatology or pediatric oncology. The field offers excellent prospects due to the continuing demand for specialized pediatric care and opportunities in hospitals, clinics as well as the academic world.

AI Impact on the job

AI is changing the role of pediatrician through diagnostic tools that analyze medical data more efficiently and predict conditions more accurately. This makes analytical thinking and technology integration essential, as well as the ability to collaborate with AI systems. The job market prospects are mixed; while some routine tasks are being automated, demand for pediatricians with expertise in AI-assisted care will increase. This offers opportunities for specialization, but also requires continuous education in new technologies.
