(Sommelier) As a sommelier, you manage the wine list and advise guests on the perfect wine selection to accompany their chosen dishes. You taste and evaluate wines, maintain contacts with suppliers, and ensure proper storage of the wine collection. Additionally, you train service staff in wine knowledge and presentation, so they can adequately inform guests about available wines. You work closely with the kitchen to develop food-wine pairings and with the management team to optimize wine purchasing and inventory.
You often start as a bartender or restaurant assistant to gain experience in hospitality and develop basic knowledge about beverages. As a sommelier, you can advance to head sommelier or beverage manager in renowned restaurants, hotels, or wine bars. With experience and specialization, you may become a wine buyer, restaurant manager, or start your own wine trade or consultancy. The demand for wine experts is growing due to increased interest in gastronomy and wine tourism.
AI supports your work by generating wine recommendations based on guest preferences and dishes, which speeds up your advisory process. Digital wine lists and apps can automatically suggest food-wine pairings, but your expertise remains crucial for making the right choices. Inventory management systems become smarter in predicting demand and optimizing purchasing. However, personal interaction, sensory evaluation, and creating unique wine experiences remain entirely human tasks that AI cannot take over.
