(Veearts) A veterinarian is responsible for the health and welfare of livestock animals. This veterinarian works in a dynamic environment where various animal species and health problems are addressed daily. The work includes conducting medical examinations, making diagnoses, treating diseases, and preventing infections. Veterinarians advise livestock farmers about nutrition and proper care of their animals. They often work together with other health professionals and play an important role in the quality of meat and milk production. The work takes place at various companies or institutions, ranging from large farms to specialized veterinary practices. This profession requires a master's degree in Veterinary Medicine at university, followed by registration with the Royal Netherlands Veterinary Association. Important skills are medical knowledge, problem-solving ability, communication skills, and physical resilience. Veterinarians can specialize in specific animal species or medical areas such as reproduction, nutrition, or infectious diseases. Career opportunities include your own practice, working at large agricultural companies, research, or positions at government agencies dealing with animal welfare and food safety.
To become a veterinarian, a university degree in Veterinary Medicine is required, for which you must have completed at least VWO. The subject profile Nature & Health (N&G) is most suitable, where the subjects biology, chemistry, and mathematics B are essential for admission to the study. The Veterinary Medicine degree takes 6 years and is followed by a mandatory internship and registration period. Experience alone cannot compensate for this formal university education, as the profession is legally protected.
As a veterinarian, you often start as an assistant veterinarian in a mixed practice where you gain experience with different animal species and treatments. With experience, you can advance to senior veterinarian, practice owner, or specialize in specific areas such as reproduction, nutrition, or livestock veterinary medicine. Additionally, there are opportunities in the food industry, government, or as an advisor for large livestock farms. The field offers good prospects due to the growing demand for animal welfare and food safety in modern agriculture.
AI transforms the role of the veterinarian by supporting diagnostics, image analysis, and data analysis, enabling more efficient and accurate decisions. Veterinarians must develop new skills, such as understanding AI tools and interpreting automated data. Labor market prospects are mixed: while automation can take over routine tasks, demand for well-trained veterinarians with technological skills will grow, especially in specialized and complex care.
