For a career as a nurse, you need an HBO degree in Nursing, for which you must have completed HAVO or VWO with the Nature & Health (N&G) profile. Important subjects are biology, chemistry, and mathematics, because you need knowledge of the human body and medication effects. After your HBO diploma, you can start working immediately, but there are also growth opportunities toward specialized master's programs. An MBO education as Healthcare Assistant-IG can be a good stepping stone toward HBO nursing.
As a nurse, you often start as a beginning nurse or level 3 healthcare provider in a healthcare institution. With experience, you can grow into head nurse, team leader, or specialized nurse in areas such as ICU, OR, or oncology. Further career opportunities lie in management (department heads, care manager) or education as a nursing instructor. The sector offers excellent job security due to aging population and structural shortages, making growth opportunities abundantly available.
AI transforms the role of nurses by automating routine tasks, such as patient monitoring and data analysis, allowing nurses to spend more time on direct patient care. New skills, such as working with AI tools and interpreting data, become crucial. The job market is expected to increase demand for nurses with technological skills, while the need for human interaction and empathy remains. This can lead to a hybrid role where nurses are both caregivers and technology experts.
