What will you learn?

(Interieurontwerp) During the HBO Interior Design program, you learn the art and science of designing harmonious and functional interior spaces. You delve into various aspects of interior design such as color theory, space planning, and material usage. By combining creativity with technical knowledge, you develop skills like visual communication, technical drawing abilities, and applying trends in interior decoration. You work on diverse projects where you transform your ideas into practical designs, taking into account sustainability and user experience. This program is special due to its strong focus on developing a personal style and increasing your creative self-confidence. Additionally, you get the chance to collaborate with real clients and gain experience in the professional world through internships. You conclude with a portfolio that showcases your unique designs and your growth as a designer.

Required Education

For HBO Interior Design, you need at least a HAVO diploma, VWO diploma, or MBO-4 diploma. The Culture & Society (C&M) profile aligns best with this creative program, but other profiles are also accepted. Drawing is often strongly recommended and sometimes a portfolio admission or creative test is required. If you don't have a suitable diploma, you can still be admitted through a 21+ test or colloquium doctum.

Career Prospects

Career Prospects after HBO Interior Design After completing HBO Interior Design, you can work as an interior designer, handling both private and commercial projects. Many graduates find employment at design agencies, architectural firms, or start their own practice. You can also work at furniture stores, home furnishing companies, or in the retail sector where knowledge of spatial design is valued. Typical positions are interior designer, spatial designer, interior project manager, or purchasing advisor at furniture stores. Additionally, the hospitality and retail sectors offer opportunities for designing restaurants, shops, and showrooms. The healthcare sector and housing corporations also have demand for interior experts to create functional and pleasant living environments. Expected Developments Opportunities lie especially in sustainable and accessible design, where energy efficiency and circular economy are becoming increasingly important. Aging population also creates demand for adapted living concepts. However, the threats are considerable: the construction sector struggles with declining investments and economic uncertainty. Many private clients postpone interior projects, while competition increases due to DIY trends and online platforms. The job market for interior designers is therefore noticeably shrinking.

Impact of AI on this program

AI has a significant impact on the HBO Interior Design program. The use of AI tools in design processes means that students learn to work with advanced software for 3D modeling and generative designs. New subjects like data analysis for user experience and sustainable materials are becoming increasingly relevant. Career prospects are evolving; graduates must now also master skills in technology and data integration, which increases their opportunities in the market, especially in innovative and tech-driven environments.
