What does a Design Manager?

(Design Manager) As a Design Manager, you are the driving force behind innovative design projects and lead a diverse team of designers, analysts and strategists. Your daily activities are varied and inspiring: you develop creative concepts that meet customer needs and market demands, guide your team and ensure smooth collaboration between different disciplines. You lead brainstorming sessions, organize workshops and present designs to stakeholders, convincing them of the value of your visions. You get the opportunity to work with experienced colleagues from different sectors, which helps you further expand your own skills and knowledge. What makes this position special is the impact you have on both internal processes and external customer relationships. Your designs not only help strengthen the company's identity, but also build a strong emotional connection with customers. However, there are also challenges; balancing creativity with business objectives can sometimes be complex, especially when deadlines approach or when customer requirements change. You must be able to set priorities, switch quickly and find innovative solutions while keeping your team motivated.

Required Education

This position requires a university education (WO), preferably in industrial design, technical business administration, or a comparable study that combines creativity with management skills. The VWO profile Nature & Technology (N&T) provides a solid foundation, where mathematics and physics are important subjects for understanding technical design principles. Many employers value an additional MBA or specialization in project management and leadership skills. Although formal education is important, extensive experience in design projects and proven leadership qualities can in exceptional cases also provide access to this senior position.
