What will you learn?

(Elektrotechniek) The MBO Electrical Engineering program focuses on designing, installing and maintaining electrical systems.

Required Education

For MBO Electrical Engineering you need at least a VMBO diploma, where the level (2, 3 or 4) determines which VMBO variant is required. The Nature & Technology (N&T) profile fits best with this study, because you already gain knowledge of mathematics and physics. Mathematics and physics are therefore strongly recommended subjects for this technical program. If you are 21 years or older and don't have a suitable prior education, you can still be admitted through an entrance exam.

Career Prospects

Career Prospects Electrical Engineering MBO After completing the MBO Electrical Engineering program, graduates have various career opportunities available in a wide range of sectors. The electrical engineering industry offers stable employment, with graduates finding work at installation companies, industrial enterprises, energy suppliers and in construction. Typical positions include electrical technician, service technician, process operator and maintenance worker. Many graduates find work at technical installation firms where they are responsible for the installation and maintenance of electrical systems in homes, offices and industrial complexes. Additionally, there are opportunities in the process industry, at network operators like Alliander and TenneT, and in the maritime sector. The automation industry also offers good prospects for electrical technicians who want to specialize in control systems and industrial automation. Expected Developments The energy transition and sustainability create new opportunities for electrical technicians, especially in the areas of solar panels, heat pumps and smart energy systems. The growing demand for data centers and electric mobility also creates additional employment. However, there are also threats: increasing automation may make certain routine tasks obsolete, while competition from higher-educated professionals may increase in some positions. Additionally, the complexity of modern systems requires continuous professional development.

Impact of AI on this program

AI has a significant impact on the MBO Electrical Engineering field of study. Students encounter topics such as machine learning, automation and data analysis, which changes industry requirements. The content of the study will increasingly focus on practical applications of AI in electrical engineering, such as smart devices and IoT technology. Career prospects for graduates improve, as companies are increasingly looking for technicians who understand how AI systems are integrated into electrical engineering applications.
