Career Prospects

As a graduate of MBO Fashion Design you can find various positions within the fashion industry. Many graduates start as assistant designers at fashion companies, clothing brands or garment factories, where they provide support in the design process and pattern making. Other popular positions are fashion advisor in retail, stylist for photography shoots or events, and pattern maker at production companies. Some graduates choose to start their own fashion label as independent entrepreneurs or take on freelance design assignments. The fashion industry also offers opportunities in related sectors such as costume design for theater and film, workwear for companies, or sportswear at specialized brands. Retailers regularly seek employees with fashion knowledge for purchasing and merchandising positions. Additionally, new opportunities are emerging in the growing sustainable fashion sector, where knowledge of environmentally friendly materials and production processes is becoming increasingly valuable. Expected Developments Opportunities lie primarily in the growing demand for sustainable fashion and circular production processes, where designers specialized in eco-friendly materials and textile recycling are attractive to employers. Digitalization also offers new possibilities in virtual fashion and 3D design. However, threats are significant: the Dutch fashion industry is shrinking due to production relocation to low-wage countries and increasing competition from fast fashion. Automation threatens traditional production jobs, while online retail puts pressure on physical fashion retail.

Impact of AI on this program

AI plays an increasingly important role in fashion design, especially in trend analysis and predicting consumer preferences. You learn to work with AI-driven design software that helps with color combinations and pattern variations. You also get acquainted with AI tools for virtual fitting and 3D visualization of designs. The program prepares you for the digital transformation in the fashion industry, where AI is used for more sustainable production processes and personalized fashion.
