King's Commissioner

(Commissaris Van De Koning) The King's Commissioner (CdK) is the figurehead and chair of the provincial government and fulfills a central role in public administration at the provincial level. The position combines administrative leadership, representation of the state, and connecting authority between different administrative levels. The King's Commissioner chairs both the Provincial Council and the Provincial Executive and monitors the administrative process, the quality of decision-making, and the mutual relationships within the provincial government. In doing so, the CdK ensures careful, transparent, and democratic proceedings of meetings and decision-making. As a state body, the King's Commissioner represents the Kingdom in the province. In this role, he or she functions as a link between the province and the national government, and oversees the implementation of national laws and regulations within the province. The CdK also has a coordinating role in special situations, such as crises, disasters, and security issues. The King's Commissioner maintains intensive contacts with municipalities, water boards, social organizations, the business community, and other public partners. The position requires connecting diverse interests and promoting cooperation within the region. The CdK stimulates regional development, administrative coherence, and long-term vision on provincial challenges. Additionally, the King's Commissioner plays a role in appointment and reappointment procedures for mayors and serves as a contact point and confidential advisor for mayors within the province. The position also has a representative character: the King's Commissioner represents the province at official occasions and contributes to the positioning and profiling of the province, both nationally and internationally.
