(Hovenier) As a gardener, you create and maintain green outdoor spaces for private individuals, businesses, and government institutions. You design gardens, plant trees and shrubs, install lawns, and provide seasonal maintenance for parks and gardens. You work with various tools and machines such as lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, and soil cultivation equipment. Additionally, you advise clients on plant selection, garden maintenance, and sustainable green management, taking into account soil conditions, climate, and the client's wishes.
As a gardener, you often start as a garden assistant or green maintenance worker at a landscaping company or green services department. After gaining experience, you can advance to independent gardener, foreman, or green project leader, where you manage larger projects and advise clients. Experienced gardeners often start their own business or specialize in garden design, tree pruning, or ecological management. The sector is growing due to increasing attention to urban greenery and sustainability, which offers good advancement opportunities.
AI supports your work through smart planning apps that predict optimal planting times and maintenance schedules based on weather and seasons. Drone imagery and sensors help monitor large green areas and provide early detection of diseases or drought stress. Automatic irrigation systems and robotic mowers take over routine maintenance, giving you more time for creative garden designs and specialized plant care. AI tools also help create 3D visualizations for clients to better present garden designs.
