Career Prospects

After completing the MBO Furniture Design program, graduates have various career opportunities in the creative and technical sector. Many graduates find work as furniture designers at furniture manufacturers, design studios, or interior design firms. Other popular positions are product designer, technical draftsperson, or work preparation specialist in the furniture industry. Additionally, graduates can work as advisors at furniture stores or as independent designers. The furniture industry in the Netherlands offers stable employment, particularly at traditional furniture manufacturers in regions like Noord-Brabant and Gelderland. The growing market for custom-made furniture and restoration of vintage furniture pieces also creates new opportunities. Many graduates also find work in related sectors such as kitchen manufacturers, office furniture producers, or companies that make displays and exhibition stands. Expected Developments Opportunities lie in the increasing demand for sustainable and circular furniture production, where recycling and reuse of materials are central. The digitalization of design processes and the emergence of 3D printing offer new possibilities for innovative production. Threats include competition from low-wage countries and pressure on traditional furniture manufacturers due to online sales and changing consumer preferences.

Impact of AI on this program

AI tools are revolutionizing furniture design through automatic generation of design variations and optimization of material usage. You learn to work with AI-driven CAD software that makes suggestions for design and construction. You also learn to use AI tools for trend analysis and market research to determine which furniture styles and materials will become popular. Additionally, AI helps with simulating production processes and cost calculations.
