(Matroos) As a seaman in the maritime sector, you play an essential role in the daily operations aboard various types of vessels, such as cargo ships, tankers, or passenger ships. Your responsibilities include preparing the boat for departure, executing maintenance and safety procedures, and assisting the crew during sailing. Seamen are often the first line of defense when it comes to emergency situations, and must be able to work effectively with other team members to ensure the safety and efficiency of the maritime fleet. During voyages, tasks such as operating navigation and safety equipment, maintaining cargo, and keeping work spaces clean are of great importance. Knowledge of maritime regulations and procedures is crucial, as well as good physical condition and team spirit. Additionally, the role of seaman can also vary depending on the type of vessel and the specific requirements of the employer. There are many opportunities for growth and development in this position, allowing seamen to gain valuable skills and experience in the maritime world. The position of seaman is therefore not only challenging, but also very diverse and offers the opportunity to be part of a dynamic and adventurous profession.
For a career as a seaman, an MBO education level 2 to 4 in the direction of shipping or maritime technology is the most common route. Think for example of MBO Maritime Officer, Shipping or Water Management, where subjects such as navigation, ship technology and safety are central. A technical MBO education can also be suitable as a foundation. Additionally, you can start as a beginner without specific prior education as a deck hand, where you develop your skills through work experience and additional courses (such as safety certificates).
As a beginning seafarer, you often start as a deckhand or ship's apprentice before growing into a seaman. From this position, you can advance to boatswain, officer, and eventually captain by obtaining maritime certificates and gaining experience. The maritime sector offers stable employment with good international opportunities, especially in merchant shipping, offshore, and inland shipping. With growing world trade and energy transition, plenty of advancement opportunities continue to exist.
AI has a significant impact on the seaman position. Automation of navigation and ship systems can facilitate routine tasks, but also requires seamen to develop new skills, such as understanding AI-driven technologies and data analysis. The role will become increasingly technology-oriented, while soft skills such as teamwork and problem-solving abilities remain important. While demand for traditional functions decreases, opportunities arise in technical support and maintenance of AI systems on ships, which changes the job market.
