What will you learn?

(Drone Piloot) In the Drone Pilot program, you learn everything about professionally operating drones in various sectors. You develop technical skills for flying different types of drones, from small camera drones to heavy industrial models. The program combines practical experience with theoretical knowledge about aviation legislation, meteorology, and flight safety. You learn to work with advanced camera and sensor technology for inspection work, surveying, and film production. You carry out practical projects at companies in infrastructure, agriculture, and the media industry. A typical study day consists of flight training on outdoor grounds, technical and maintenance lessons in the workshop, and theory lessons about regulations and mission planning. The program is currently offered at ROC Amsterdam, but will be expanded to more ROCs throughout the country during this year to meet the growing demand for qualified drone pilots.

Core Subjects

Career Prospects

As a graduated drone pilot, diverse career opportunities open up in a rapidly growing market. Many graduates find work at inspection and engineering firms where they inspect infrastructure, wind turbines, and industrial installations. The film and TV industry also offers excellent opportunities for aerial photography and cinematography. Additionally, more and more opportunities are emerging in agriculture for precision farming and crop monitoring, with police and emergency services for surveillance and rescue operations, and in the logistics sector where drones are deployed for deliveries and warehouse management. Typical job titles include drone operator, aerial photographer, inspection specialist, and remote sensing analyst. Many professionals work as freelancers or start their own business, while others join technical service providers, media companies, or government institutions permanently. Expected Developments The prospects for drone pilots are excellent due to advancing digitalization and automation. New applications in smart cities, environmental monitoring, and delivery services constantly create new jobs. However, increasing automation of flight functions may make some tasks obsolete in the long term. Moreover, the growing popularity of drones leads to stricter regulations, which places higher demands on certification and continuous training.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence plays an increasingly important role in the drone industry and is being integrated into the curriculum. You learn to work with AI-controlled autonomous flight functions, image recognition software for automatic inspection, and machine learning algorithms for data analysis of drone recordings. The program prepares you for the future where drones operate increasingly independently and AI is used for route optimization, obstacle avoidance, and predictive maintenance. You also learn how to use AI tools for analyzing large amounts of collected data from drone missions.
