What does a Police officer?

(Politieagent) As a police officer, you are an indispensable link in maintaining public order and safety. Your daily activities are diverse and challenging. Think of patrolling streets, registering incidents, and providing support to victims and witnesses. You supervise events, such as festivals and sports matches, and you respond to emergency situations, where you must act quickly and adequately. The work environment is dynamic; you can work both in an office and outside on the street. The appeal of this position lies not only in its social value; as a police officer, you truly make a difference in the community. You work together with colleagues, have regular contact with various organizations and get the chance to further develop yourself through training and education. Being confronted with diverse situations and the opportunity to contribute to a safe society make this role particularly valuable.

Required Education

For a career as a police officer, you need at least an MBO level 2 diploma, where all MBO directions are accessible - from technology to healthcare or economics. After your MBO diploma, you follow the police training at the Police Academy, where you are trained to become a basic competent police employee. A specific preliminary education is therefore not required, but good communication skills, physical fitness and integrity are essential. Even with a HAVO or VWO diploma, you can directly enter the police training.

Career Perspective

As a police officer, you usually start as an aspirant during your training at the police academy, after which you go on the street as a patrol officer. You can advance to positions such as community police officer, detective, traffic police or specialized units such as the arrest team or cybercrime. Further career steps lead to management positions such as team leader, commissioner or district commander. The police offers excellent advancement opportunities with various specializations, and the demand for police personnel remains stable due to the constant need for safety in society.

AI Impact on the job

AI is changing the role of police officers by automating tasks such as data analysis, surveillance and reporting. Police officers must now develop digital skills and knowledge about AI tools to effectively collaborate with technology. The prospects in the job market are mixed; while AI may replace some functions, new opportunities also arise for technological specialists within the police. This leads to a shift from physical to more analytical and strategic tasks.
