(Software Engineer) A Software Engineer plays a crucial role in the development of software applications. Daily you work on designing, coding and testing software programs that are crucial for business processes and customer needs. You work in a dynamic team and ensure that projects are completed on time and according to specifications. Your responsibilities also include solving technical problems and optimizing software performance. This role has a major impact on the efficiency of business activities, as well-functioning software is essential for modern companies. Additionally, you participate in code reviews and collaboration sessions to ensure the quality of the products.

Dag in het leven van een Software Engineer
For a position as Software Engineer, typically an HBO or university degree in computer science, computer science or a comparable technical field is required. When you want to follow this direction via HAVO/VWO, the profile Nature & Technology (N&T) is most suitable, where mathematics and physics are important subjects. Although formal education is strongly preferred, experienced programmers with demonstrable skills and a strong portfolio can sometimes also be considered for this position. For MBO level you can think of ICT-related courses, but then you will probably first have to gain experience in junior positions.
As a Software Engineer you can advance from junior developer or trainee positions where you have learned the basics of programming. From this mid-level role multiple career paths are open: you can grow to Senior Software Engineer, Tech Lead or Software Architect for the technical route, or toward Product Manager or Engineering Manager for more strategic roles. The field offers excellent prospects due to continuous digitalization and growing demand for software expertise. With the right experience and specialization you can make significant steps within 3-5 years toward leadership or specialized positions.
AI transforms the role of software engineers by automating routine tasks, such as code generation and bug detection, which increases their productivity. Engineers must now develop new skills in AI integration, machine learning and data processing. The demand for engineers with knowledge of AI applications will increase, while traditional programming skills may become less relevant. The labor market will likely shift, with a focus on hybrid skills, where creative problem-solving ability alongside technological expertise becomes increasingly important.
