What will you learn?

(Biomedische Technologie) The Biomedical Technology program focuses on the development of medical technologies and innovative solutions for healthcare. Students learn how biomedical principles and techniques can be applied to address problems in healthcare. This includes the design and development of medical devices, diagnostic equipment, and treatment systems. In addition to technological knowledge, ethical and legal considerations are also covered, ensuring that graduates are not only technically competent, but also aware of the impact of their work on patients and society. The combination of engineering and biomedical knowledge makes this program particularly relevant in the rapidly growing healthcare sector.

Required Education

For admission to Biomedical Technology you need a VWO diploma, or you can enter with a completed HBO propaedeutic year. The choice profile Nature & Technology (N&T) fits best with this study, because you take the required exact sciences subjects there. For admission, mathematics B and physics are mandatory, and chemistry is strongly recommended due to the biomedical component. If you don't have a VWO diploma, you can also enter through the 21+ admission exam or colloquium doctum.

Career Prospects

After completing the Biomedical Technology program, various career opportunities open up in the dynamic healthcare sector. Graduates find work as biomedical engineer, product development engineer, or clinical research associate at medical technology companies such as Philips Healthcare, Medtronic or smaller innovative startups. Hospitals and academic medical centers also offer opportunities as biomedical technologist or R&D specialist. The medical technology industry is a growing sector where graduates can specialize in various areas: from diagnostic imaging and surgical robotics to implants and home care technology. Additionally, there are opportunities at consulting firms, inspection bodies, or in the pharmaceutical industry where biomedical expertise is becoming increasingly important. Many graduates also choose a PhD track at universities or research institutes, where they contribute to groundbreaking research into new medical technologies. The combination of technical knowledge and insight into medical processes makes these professionals highly sought after by employers. Expected Developments Opportunities lie in the aging population and increasing demand for personalized medicine, which stimulates innovation in medical technology. Digitalization and AI integration in healthcare create new fields of work. Threats are the strict regulations that can slow innovation and increasing international competition in the medtech sector.

Impact of AI on this program

AI has a significant impact on Biomedical Technology, especially in data processing and diagnostics. Technologies such as machine learning improve the accuracy of medical diagnoses and treatments. Professionals must now possess skills in data management and AI systems, shifting the focus from purely engineering knowledge to interdisciplinary collaboration and data-driven approaches. This creates new opportunities in the job market for graduates who can combine these skills with traditional biomedical knowledge.
