What will you learn?

(Health Informatics) The Health Informatics program focuses on the intersection of healthcare and informatics. Students acquire knowledge and skills in both technology and healthcare to effectively use and analyze data within the healthcare sector. The program covers topics such as electronic medical records, data analysis, privacy and security of health information, and implementing technology in care processes. Due to the growing demand for digital solutions in healthcare, this study offers excellent future opportunities, enabling graduates to contribute to improving patient care and health management. With a combination of technical and analytical skills, students are able to develop innovative solutions that improve the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare services. The program also prepares them to work in interdisciplinary teams, a crucial aspect in the increasingly connected world of healthcare.

Required Education

For admission to the WO Health Informatics program, you need a VWO diploma or a completed HBO propaedeutic year. The Nature & Technology (N&T) profile fits best with this study, as you need both strong mathematical skills and technical insight for informatics and data analysis. Mathematics B and preferably physics or informatics are recommended subjects for a good start. If you don't have a VWO diploma, you can also be admitted through a 21+ test or colloquium doctum if you are 21 years or older.

Career Prospects

After completing the Health Informatics program, diverse career opportunities open up at the intersection of healthcare and technology. Graduates typically find work as health data analysts, clinical information specialists, or EHR consultants at hospitals, mental health institutions, and healthcare technology companies. Positions such as healthcare innovation advisor, privacy officer in healthcare, or implementation specialist for healthcare ICT systems are also among the possibilities. The healthcare sector remains a stable employer, with especially medium and large healthcare organizations actively seeking professionals who combine technical knowledge with understanding of care processes. Additionally, software companies specializing in healthcare solutions, consulting firms, and government organizations offer interesting career prospects. Positions range from project management in digital healthcare innovation to research positions at universities and knowledge institutions. Expected Developments The opportunities for Health Informatics graduates remain stable due to the continuous digitalization of healthcare and the growing focus on data-driven decision-making. Artificial intelligence and machine learning in healthcare create new specialization opportunities. However, threats include rapid technological developments that require continuous education and the complex regulations around privacy and data security in the healthcare sector, which can lead to strict compliance requirements.

Impact of AI on this program

AI has a significant impact on Health Informatics by automating data analysis and improving diagnostic processes. Students must now develop skills in machine learning and data science to benefit from these technologies. The demand for professionals who can implement AI in healthcare is increasing, making graduates with knowledge of both technology and healthcare better prepared for the future workforce.
