What will you learn?

(Geografie) In the WO Geography program, you study the complex relationships between people, society and environment at different scale levels. You learn to analyze spatial patterns using GIS systems, satellite images and data modeling. The program combines physical geography (climate, landforms, ecosystems) with social geography (urban development, migration, economic geography). You develop strong research and analytical skills to scientifically investigate spatial issues such as climate change, urbanization and sustainability.

Required Education

VWO diploma with mathematics B and physics (N&T profile).

Career Prospects

As a geography graduate, you are broadly employable in various sectors where spatial analysis and sustainability issues are central. Many geographers find work at government institutions such as municipalities, provinces and Rijkswaterstaat, where they contribute to spatial planning, environmental policy and infrastructure planning. Consulting firms also offer good opportunities, particularly in the field of environmental impact studies, urban development and climate adaptation. The private sector values geographers for their analytical skills and GIS expertise. Companies in logistics, real estate and retail use geographical knowledge for location analyses and market research. Additionally, you can work in education, at international organizations or in journalism as a specialist on geographical topics. The combination of technical skills (GIS, data modeling) and societal knowledge makes geographers versatile professionals. Their ability to analyze complex spatial issues is becoming increasingly valuable in our data-driven society. Expected Developments Opportunities arise from the growing attention to climate change, energy transition and sustainable urban development. Digitalization and big data create new possibilities for spatial analysis. Threats include the automation of GIS tasks and competition from specialists from other disciplines who develop geographical skills.

Impact of AI on this program

AI plays an increasingly important role in geographical research, especially in analyzing large datasets and satellite images. You learn to work with machine learning algorithms for pattern recognition in spatial data and AI-driven models for climate and migration forecasts. The program prepares you to use AI tools for automatic land use classification and predictive mapping. These skills have become essential for modern geographers in both research and practice.
