What will you learn?

(Milieukunde) The WO Environmental Sciences program focuses on studying environmental problems and solutions in a broad range of contexts. Students learn how human actions influence the environment and acquire knowledge about sustainability, ecology, and developing policies and strategies that contribute to the restoration and preservation of our natural environment. The program combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience, where students become involved in projects and research that have direct impact on society. Core topics include environmental legislation, ecological impact analyses, and sustainable development. The program prepares students for a career where they can contribute as environmental scientists to a more sustainable world.

Required Education

For admission to WO Environmental Sciences, you need a VWO diploma or a completed HBO foundation year. The VWO profile Nature & Health (N&G) or Nature & Technology (N&T) fits best with this study, as this gives you the required natural sciences foundation. Mathematics B and chemistry are usually mandatory subjects, while physics and biology are strongly recommended. If you don't have a VWO diploma, you may also be eligible through a 21+ exam or colloquium doctum.

Career Prospects

After completing the WO Environmental Sciences program, various career opportunities open up across a broad range of sectors. Graduates find work as environmental advisors at consulting firms, policy officers at government institutions, or project leaders at NGOs. The private sector also offers opportunities, for example as sustainability specialists at large companies or consultants at engineering firms that focus on environmental issues. Government remains an important employer, where environmental sciences alumni find positions at provinces, water authorities and the national government to develop and implement environmental policy. Additionally, many work in research at universities and knowledge institutions such as TNO or RIVM. International organizations and consulting firms offer opportunities for cross-border environmental issues. The job market for environmental scientists has shown stable demand in recent years. Both new regulations and growing awareness among companies ensure a constant need for expertise in the field of environment and sustainability. Expected Developments Opportunities lie in the continued sustainability transformation of the economy, the energy transition and new legislation such as CSRD reporting. This creates work in climate adaptation and circular economy. Threats include increased competition from related programs and possible budget cuts on environmental policy during economic downturns.

Impact of AI on this program

AI has a significant impact on the 'WO Environmental Sciences' study program. It enables students to analyze large datasets and model environmental problems more efficiently. New topics such as machine learning for ecological predictions and data analysis techniques are becoming increasingly relevant. Additionally, new career perspectives emerge in technology-driven organizations that use AI for environmental management and sustainability. Graduates are trained as experts who combine both ecological and technological knowledge, which increases their employability.
