What will you learn?

(Industrial Design) The Industrial Design program at university focuses on combining creativity, technology and functionality. Students learn how to design products that are aesthetically appealing, user-friendly and sustainable. Throughout the program, various design techniques and methods are taught, as well as critical thinking about the impact of products on the environment and users. The program includes courses in product design, materials science, user research and innovation processes. Besides theoretical knowledge, students spend much time on practical projects where they realize and test their designs. This leads to a broad range of skills, varying from sketching and modeling to digital prototyping and presenting. The program prepares students to come up with creative solutions for complex design challenges in a rapidly changing world.

Required Education

For the WO Industrial Design program you need a VWO diploma or a completed HBO propaedeutic year. The choice profile Nature & Technology (N&T) fits best with this program, because you combine technical knowledge with creative skills. Mathematics B and physics are often mandatory subjects, while drawing or visual arts are strongly recommended due to the design aspect. If you don't have a VWO diploma, you can also be admitted to the program through a 21+ exam or colloquium doctum.

Career Prospects

After completing Industrial Design at university, diverse career opportunities open up in various sectors. Graduates often find work as product designer, industrial designer or design researcher at design agencies, technology companies and manufacturing companies. Many designers are employed at consultancy firms that specialize in product innovation, or at large multinationals in sectors such as automotive, consumer electronics, furniture industry and medical technology. The role of industrial designer varies from concept development to developing user-friendly interfaces and sustainable product solutions. Some graduates choose a freelance career or start their own design studio. Additionally, there are opportunities in related fields such as design management, user research (UX research) and strategic design consultancy. Education and research also offer prospects for academically oriented graduates. Expected Developments Opportunities lie especially in the growing attention to sustainability and circular economy, where designers are crucial for developing environmentally friendly products. Digitalization creates new possibilities in the design of smart products and IoT applications. Threats arise from increasing automation of design processes and strong competition from graduates from other countries with lower labor costs.

Impact of AI on this program

AI transforms the field of study "WO Industrial Design" by automating design processes and introducing new tools, such as generative designs and simulations. Relevant new topics include interaction design with AI, data-driven product development and ethics in technology. Career prospects for graduates are changing, as they not only develop traditional design skills, but also need to learn how AI systems are designed and implemented. This allows them to work in various sectors, from product development to consultancy in technological innovation.
