What does a Anesthesiologist?

(Anesthesist) The anesthesiologist is responsible for anesthesia and pain management of patients before, during and after surgery. You monitor vital functions and ensure the safety and comfort of the patient throughout the procedure.

Required Education

To become an anesthesiologist, you need a university degree in Medicine (WO), followed by a 5-year specialization in Anesthesiology. For admission to the Medicine program, VWO with the Nature & Health (N&G) profile is required, where the subjects biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics are essential. After obtaining your medical degree, you must register as a basic doctor (BIG-registration) before you can start the specialization training. Experience alone is not sufficient - formal medical education and specialization are legally required to practice as an anesthesiologist.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

As an anesthesiologist, you already reach the pinnacle of your medical career after a long education through medicine and specialization. Growth opportunities lie in subspecializations such as intensive care, pain management or pediatric anesthesia, as well as leadership positions such as department head or medical manager. You can also develop towards education as a trainer of residents or research within pharmacology and anesthesiology. The prospects are excellent due to a structural shortage of specialists and the growing demand for more complex operations.

AI Impact on the job

AI has a significant impact on the role of anesthesiologist. It can automate routine tasks, such as monitoring and dosing, allowing anesthesiologists to focus on more complex aspects of care. New skills, such as interpreting AI data and using technology for patient safety, become crucial. The job market prospects are mixed: while some tasks are automated and demand for traditional roles may decrease, the need for specialized anesthesiologists who can work with AI tools will increase.
