What does a Radiologist?

(Radioloog) Radiologists are doctors who specialize in diagnosing diseases using medical imaging techniques such as X-rays, CT scans, MRIs and ultrasounds. You interpret these images to make diagnoses and guide treatment plans, often working behind the scenes.

Required Education

To become a radiologist, a university degree in Medicine (WO) is mandatory, followed by a 5-year specialist training in Radiology. For VWO you need the Nature & Health (N&G) profile, where mathematics B, physics, chemistry and biology are essential subjects for admission to Medicine studies. After your medical degree, you must first obtain your basic medical registration before you can begin specialization. Experience alone is not sufficient - the formal medical education and specialization program are legally required to work as a radiologist.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

As a radiologist, you start after your medical studies with the radiology specialization training, which lasts 5 years. After graduation, you can advance to chief radiologist, department head or subspecialist in areas such as neuroradiology or interventional radiology. Academic careers as a researcher or educator are also possible. The field has excellent prospects due to the growing demand for imaging studies and technological developments such as AI support.

AI Impact on the job

AI transforms the role of radiologists through automation of routine image interpretation, leading to faster diagnoses. Radiologists must develop skills in AI analysis and data infrastructure management to collaborate with advanced technologies. Job market prospects will shift toward more complex cases and interdisciplinary collaboration; while some repetitive tasks may disappear, demand grows for radiologists who can effectively integrate AI tools, strengthening their role in healthcare.
