What does a Gynecologist?

(Gynaecoloog) Gynecologists specialize in the health of female reproductive organs and obstetrics. They guide pregnancies, perform deliveries and treat conditions.

Required Education

To become a gynecologist, you need a university degree in Medicine (WO), followed by a six-year specialist training in Gynecology and Obstetrics. For admission to Medical studies, a VWO diploma with the Nature & Health (N&G) profile is required, with chemistry, physics and biology being mandatory subjects. Mathematics B is strongly recommended as it helps with the numerus fixus selection for Medicine. Experience alone cannot replace this extensive medical education, as the profession of gynecologist is legally protected and requires registration as a medical specialist.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

As a gynecologist, you usually start as an ANIOS (resident not in training) after your medical studies, followed by specialization to become a gynecologist. After completing your training, you can advance to become a senior clinician, department head or medical manager in hospitals. You can further subspecialize in areas such as oncology, fertility or perinatology, or start your own practice. The demand for gynecologists remains high due to aging population and increasing focus on women's healthcare, which offers excellent career prospects.

AI Impact on the job

AI is changing the role of gynecologists by automating tasks such as image analysis, diagnosis and patient monitoring. This shifts the focus toward complex decision-making and patient communication. New skills in data analysis and the use of AI tools become essential. The job market is expected to see a combination of human and AI-assisted gynecologists, where demand for professionals who can effectively integrate technology increases, while routine tasks may decrease.
