What does a Historian?

(Historicus) A historian researches, interprets and explains the past to provide insight into how societies have developed. This work can look very different across various professions: Research & science – conducts archival research, writes articles or books and presents new insights on historical themes. Education – teaches, develops learning materials and helps students or pupils critically understand the past. Heritage & museums – works on exhibitions, manages collections, writes explanations and translates history to a broad audience. Archives & documentation – organizes, describes and makes historical sources accessible so others can use them. Media & public history – writes for magazines, creates podcasts or documentaries, or provides advice for historical productions. Policy, culture & advisory – provides historical context for policy, commemorations, cultural projects or societal issues. In short: a historian works with sources and stories from the past and translates them into knowledge, context and meaning for the present.

Required Education

For a position as a historian, you need at least an HBO bachelor's degree in History or a university education such as History, Art History or Archaeology. In secondary school, the Culture & Society (C&M) profile is most suitable, where subjects like history, Dutch and possibly ancient languages (Latin/Greek) form a strong foundation. Good language skills in Dutch and often English are essential for analyzing sources and writing reports. A master's degree is often valued, especially for research positions where you need to make in-depth analyses of complex historical materials.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

You can start as a research assistant or archive employee at museums, universities or heritage institutions to gain experience with historical research. From there you grow into an independent historian, leading your own research projects and writing publications. Further career steps lead to senior researcher, project leader or curator positions, with opportunities to advance to head researcher or director of a historical institution. The field offers stable prospects, especially with the growing attention for heritage preservation and digitization of archives.

AI Impact on the job

AI has fundamentally changed the role of historian by automating data collection and analysis. Historians can now gain faster access to enormous datasets and digital archives, which speeds up their research process. Important new skills include data processing, critically evaluating AI outputs and digital literacy. While there are concerns about automation, human interpretation and context remain crucial. Job market prospects are mixed; some positions will disappear, while new opportunities arise in combining history with technology.
