What does a AI Safety Researcher?

(AI Safety Researcher) As an AI Safety Researcher, you investigate the fundamental risks of advanced artificial intelligence systems and develop methods to make them safer. You focus on critical challenges such as AI alignment (ensuring that AI systems do what we intend), robustness (resistance to unexpected situations), interpretability (understanding how AI systems reach decisions), and preventing misuse. You work at specialized research laboratories such as Anthropic, OpenAI Safety Team, DeepMind, or Redwood Research, or at university research groups. You publish your findings at leading conferences such as NeurIPS and ICML, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of AI researchers, ethicists, and policymakers to promote the safe development of AI.

Required Education

You need a PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Science, or a related technical field, or you must be able to demonstrate research output equivalent to PhD level. The N&T profile forms the best foundation due to its strong focus on mathematics, physics, and computer science. Subjects such as mathematics, physics, and computer science are essential for understanding complex algorithms and statistical methods. Experience with publishing research in peer-reviewed journals or conferences can sometimes compensate for formal qualifications, but the required technical level is very high.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

You often start as a PhD student or postdoctoral researcher in machine learning or AI at a university, where you gain your first research experience. You can then advance to junior researcher at an AI safety lab or academic research group. As a senior researcher, you lead your own research projects and mentor junior researchers. Further growth opportunities include research director at an AI safety organization, principal scientist at a major tech research division, or professor of AI Safety at a university where you lead your own research group.

AI Impact on the job

Your work focuses precisely on managing AI impact, making your role central to developing safer AI systems. Through your research into alignment and robustness, you help prevent future AI systems from exhibiting unintended or harmful behaviors. You develop methods to make AI systems more transparent and predictable, which becomes essential as AI gains more influence over critical decisions. Your work becomes increasingly important as the power of AI systems grows exponentially and potential risks increase proportionally.
