What will you learn?

(Informatica) The university-level Computer Science program focuses on the study of computational systems, software development and digital technologies. Students learn to program, design algorithms and understand how computer systems function. The program includes fundamental subjects such as programming, databases, networks and software engineering, and offers the opportunity to choose specializations such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and data analysis. The program combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience, often through collaborations with companies and research projects. This makes graduates well-prepared for the rapidly changing IT market and prepares them for a range of career opportunities in both the private and public sectors. Graduates are equipped with the skills to develop innovative solutions and tackle technological challenges.

Required Education

For admission to WO Computer Science you need a VWO diploma or a completed HBO propaedeutic year. The subject profile Nature & Technology (N&T) fits best with this program, but Nature & Health (N&G) is also possible. Mathematics B is mandatory for admission, and physics is strongly recommended due to the technical content of the program. If you don't have a VWO diploma, you can also take an admission exam through the colloquium doctum (21+ test).

Career Prospects

Computer Science graduates have access to a broad range of career opportunities in virtually every sector of the Dutch economy. Digitalization has ensured that computer scientists not only find employment in the traditional IT sector, but also in financial services, healthcare, government, energy and logistics. Typical roles include software developer, system architect, data scientist, cybersecurity specialist, DevOps engineer and IT consultant. The versatility of the program opens doors to both technical and more strategic roles. Many graduates start as programmers or junior developers and grow into leadership positions such as tech lead or CTO. Others choose consultancy, where they advise organizations on digital transformation, or focus on innovative areas such as machine learning and blockchain technology. The combination of technical skills and problem-solving abilities makes computer scientists valuable to both startups and established companies. Expected Developments Opportunities lie especially in emerging technologies such as AI, IoT and cloud computing, which create new specializations and roles. The increasing focus on sustainability and digital security also offers growth opportunities. Threats include rapid technological changes that require continuous upskilling and increasing automation that may replace certain routine programming tasks. International competition also requires graduates to have increasingly specialized knowledge.

Impact of AI on this program

AI has a significant impact on the WO Computer Science program. In terms of content, topics such as machine learning, natural language processing and data analysis are becoming increasingly relevant. Students learn not only traditional programming skills, but also how to develop and implement AI models. This influences the curriculum structure, in which more attention is paid to the ethical implications of technology. Career prospects for graduates improve, as companies are looking for experts who can innovate with AI solutions, leading to a growing demand for professionals in various sectors.
