What does a Internist?

(Internist) As an internist, you are a specialized doctor in internal medicine, focusing on diagnosing and treating a wide range of complex diseases in adults. Daily, you are responsible for conducting comprehensive medical evaluations, ordering diagnostic tests, and developing personalized treatment plans. You work closely with a team of healthcare professionals, including nurses, specialists, and other medical staff, in a dynamic and sometimes hectic hospital environment or specialized clinic. What makes this role particularly attractive is the versatility and depth of theory and practice. You get the opportunity to continuously acquire new medical knowledge and apply it in daily practice. Additionally, you play a crucial role in improving patients' quality of life by helping them with conditions ranging from diabetes and heart disease to infectious diseases and autoimmune disorders. The impact you have is enormous. By making the right diagnoses and developing innovative treatment plans, you not only influence the lives of individual patients, but also the broader community by contributing to public health. There are plenty of challenges; you often have to deal with complex medical cases that require a multidisciplinary approach, and you must constantly be able to set priorities in a busy work environment. You face the challenge of communicating effectively with both patients and colleagues, and staying up-to-date with the latest medical developments in this rapidly changing field. In short, the role of internist is not only essential, but also fulfilling for someone who has a passion for medicine and patient welfare.

Required Education

For the position of internist, a university degree in Medicine (6 years) is strictly required, followed by a specialization in internal medicine (another 6 years). You need at least a VWO diploma with the Nature & Health (N&G) profile, where excellent performance in chemistry, biology, and mathematics is essential. After your basic medical education, you must go through a numerus fixus and then complete the specialization training to become an internist. Experience alone can never compensate for these formal educational requirements - medical education and specialization are legally mandatory to practice as an internist.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

As an internist, you already have a long medical career behind you, starting as a resident doctor after your medical studies and continuing through the internal medicine specialization. From this senior position, you can advance to leadership roles such as department head, medical manager, or even medical director of a hospital. You can also further subspecialize in areas such as cardiology, gastroenterology, or endocrinology, or focus on academic careers in research and education. The prospects for internists remain excellent due to aging population and increasing demand for specialized medical expertise.

AI Impact on the job

AI is transforming the role of internist by supporting tasks such as diagnosis and patient monitoring with data analysis and predictive algorithms. Internists must develop skills in interpreting AI results and collaborating with technology. This leads to increased demand for hybrid professionals who possess both medical knowledge and technological expertise. In the job market, automation and AI tools may cause a shift from routine tasks to more complex care needs, possibly with a net increase in positions, but with a redistribution of tasks.
