What does a Child Psychologist?

(Kinderpsycholoog) As a child psychologist, you are an indispensable support for children and young people dealing with emotional, social, or behavioral challenges. You investigate what's happening through observations, conversations, diagnostic research, and collaboration with the child and their environment. You help young people better understand their feelings, thoughts, and experiences and guide them in developing healthy coping strategies. In doing so, you use various forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, play therapy, or system-oriented interventions, depending on what best supports the child. You create a safe, trusted, and empathetic environment where children feel free to express themselves without judgment. By following their pace and placing their world of experience at the center, you build a strong therapeutic relationship that is essential for growth and change. You give children practical tools to deal with stress, anxiety, sadness, anger, or social challenges, and you help them gradually build more self-confidence and resilience. Additionally, you work intensively with parents, caregivers, teachers, and other involved professionals. You actively involve them in the process, so that support for the child continues outside the treatment room. You provide advice, psycho-education, and tools to positively influence the child's behavior, emotions, and development. With schools, you coordinate about learning and behavioral problems and think along about appropriate interventions within the school environment. The role of child psychologist is both challenging and deeply fulfilling, because you work daily on the well-being and future of the younger generation. You have the opportunity to identify problems early, offer children perspective, and support families in difficult situations. Your impact extends beyond the treatment room; you contribute to a solid foundation for healthy, balanced development in the long term.

Required Education

For child psychologist, a university master's degree in Psychology is required, followed by a specialization in child and youth psychology. For VWO you need the Nature & Health (N&G) profile, where mathematics, biology, and chemistry are important subjects. After your master's diploma, you must also complete a postmaster specialization program and register as a GZ-psychologist or clinical psychologist. Experience alone is not sufficient - formal education and registration are legally required to work as a child psychologist.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

You usually start as an assistant psychologist or intern at GGZ institutions, youth care, or school guidance teams, where you gain first experience under supervision of experienced colleagues. After a few years, you can grow into an independently working child psychologist, team leader, or specialized therapist in specific problems such as autism or trauma. With further development, you can become a senior child psychologist, department head, or independent practice owner. The demand for child psychologists is growing due to increasing attention to mental health among young people.
